This scene from the Sound of Music demonstrates a great way of teaching music and that is by having fun doing it. In this clip, Maria (played by Julie Andrews) is teaching the children that anyone can sing and shows them by teaching them about solfege. Solfege can play an important role in Western music and helps us learn how to sight sing, but it can be difficult to remember what each note name is. Therefore, by putting it into a song that is easy to remember, it is a great way to learn. Music is about having fun and bringing joy to people. Maria did a great job of not only teaching the kids about solfege shows that learning can be more engaging when using music as a form of comprehension. Also, this teaching method can be applied to teaching in general, for example, when we learn the alphabet. The ABC’s is a song that we learn when growing up to help us remember the alphabet. Solfege is the musical alphabet of singing and works the same way. Generally, music can be used to help us learn things easier.
