As someone who hopefully wants to become a private teacher, I found this article to be very inspiring. I enjoyed how it shed light on both the positives and negatives within studio teaching. I have not had much experience with having a private teacher or studio teacher until I came to Western. I have enjoyed getting the one on one experience and learning from my colleagues in a masterclass. While I have been taking lessons at Western I have found myself relearning a lot of basic techniques and learning to play the trumpet in new ways. I personally find that the one on one private lessons is crucial to becoming a musician and should be offered more within high schools because of how helpful it is to your education. Nowadays, you have to go out of your way to look for a teacher and it can be hard to find someone with the credentials you need from them to help you learn. The article raised awareness of how performance is seen as a separate activity and how most graduates see their teaching as “getting ready for the next performance”, rather than “music education through performance”. It made me upset to read that the focus is only one performing and not teaching. I believe that in order to be a successful educator you should be able to teach properly you should always be learning new things. It is why I love pursuing music because you will never stop learning and being a performer and educator goes hand in hand. In high school, my teacher always participated in community bands and was always learning how to help our band and class in new ways. My studio teacher also plays trumpet still in many ensembles and pit bands and it is inspiring to know that they still play and can teach us what they learn regularly. If you studied with someone who is retired it would be difficult and regardless you would need to find someone who is still actively performing when seeking new instructors. The implication of Masterclass at Western University is great and the next step for many musicians looking for more. It can be seen as boring because you do not always perform, but watching your peers and seeing what they do good or bad can help you with your practicing. I believe that all music programs should at least give you the private lesson so you can learn more through that one on one experience. Overall, this was a great read and very helpful to keep in mind when trying to become a private teacher.
